SHARED SPECTRUM COMPANY APPOINTS MICHAEL D. GALLAGHER TO CHAIR COMPANY’S ADVISORY BOARD
Former Assistant Secretary of Commerce and NTIA Head will Advise Company on Introduction of “Smart” Radio Technology
VIENNA, VA, Feb. 22, 2007 – Shared Spectrum Company (SSC) announced that Michael D. Gallagher, former director of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), will chair the company’s Advisory Board.
The SSC Advisory Board will be comprised of a range of communications industry executives, financial experts and former military/government leaders. These key advisors will provide SSC executives and engineers with strategic advice and leadership on financial, business, technical and public policy issues as the company prepares to market its cognitive radio technology later this year.
“Mike Gallagher will be a tremendous asset to SSC as we move forward with commercial and military applications of our cognitive radio technology,” said Mark A. McHenry, SSC’s founder and CEO. “Mike has a deep understanding of government telecommunications policy and the needs of both government and private sector spectrum users. This, along with his enthusiasm for new and better ways to make use of radio spectrum, makes him the ideal leader of our new advisory panel.”
Gallagher, a partner in the Washington, DC, office of Perkins Coie LLP, has a wide range of experience in telecommunication issues and led the Bush Administration’s recent revamping of government spectrum policy. Under Gallagher’s leadership, the NTIA set world-leading policies in a number of areas including, ultra-wideband, millimeter wavelength communications, third-generation wireless services, dynamic frequency selection in the 5 GHz frequency band, and broadband over power lines. In producing a new direction for government spectrum management, Gallagher led the coordination of 56 Federal agencies, the Federal Communications Commission and the private sector.
“I have been following SSC’s technology development and am very impressed how Mark McHenry and his engineering team have been able to successfully unlock the unused portion of the radio spectrum,” said Gallagher. “I am honored to be part of this team, advising SSC on its promising opportunities.”
Gallagher joined the Perkins Coie law firm in February 2006. Prior to this, he was appointed Assistant Secretary of Commerce and director of NTIA by President George W. Bush on July 1, 2004 and was confirmed by the Senate on November 20, 2004, after serving as Acting Assistant Secretary since August 2003.
Prior to his appointment, he served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy and Counselor to Secretary of Commerce Donald L. Evans. Before joining the Secretary’s personal staff, he served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information and Deputy Administrator of NTIA. Before joining the Commerce Department, Gallagher held of public policy positions with AirTouch Communications Inc., and Verizon Wireless.
