Senior Systems Engineer - DoD R&D / Communications

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Shared Spectrum Company is seeking a seasoned, Senior Systems Engineer/Technical Lead with an RF background and hands-on experience in all phases of the systems development lifecycle. An advanced degree and work experience showing progressive promotion and academic achievement is required. The qualified individual will have a proven success record in delivering complex software development/integration products to the federal government, DoD and/or DARPA customers. The individual will work in close collaboration with SSC principals and senior engineers, DARPA, key government stakeholders, subcontractors, and leading university and industry experts.

Responsibilities

  • » Develop systems solutions that meet program objectives and acknowledge technical, schedule and cost constraints
  • » Technical planning, requirements and functional analyses, interface definition studies, supportability and effectiveness analyses to translate customer and program objectives into hardware and software specifications
  • » Analyses at all levels of the total system product (concept, design, development, testing, demonstration, and transition planning)
  • » Lead projects, coordinate tasks, and ensure the quality of client deliverables
  • » End-to-end systems engineering and integration, verification and validation
  • » Organize/conduct Technical Exchange Meetings
  • » Lead, coach and develop junior staff
  • » Support engineering, R&D, and business development efforts

Experience Requirements

  • » 15+ years experience in Communications and/or System Engineering, preferably in a government/DoD environment
  • » Work experience showing progressive promotion and academic achievement
  • » Experience managing junior engineers
  • » Good communication skills with the ability to lead and motivate technical team members
  • » Ability to function efficiently under pressure and communicate well with executive management
  • » Organized thinker with good problem solving skills
  • » Experience with RF physical layer technology (propagation, modulation, signal processing, antennas, etc.)
  • » Experience in development environments including, but not limited to, C, C++, with some assembly language expertise
  • » Experience defining and developing data communication protocols, products, and associated hardware and software components
  • » Experience implementing network standards and protocols including wireless networking, 802.11, 802.16, and/or 802.22
  • » Experience with mobile ad hoc networks or multi-hop networks involving link characterization, network topology management, light-weight geographic-based routing, QoS, etc.
  • » Experience developing and supporting Linux-based embedded software solutions
  • » Excellent verbal and written communication skills desired
  • » Experience with JTRS/SCA and SDR desired
  • » Experience with MATLAB, ns-2, OPNET, or QualNet desired
  • » Experience with distributed, lightweight databases, remote procedure calls (RPC/SOAP), and/or XML desired

Ideal Candidate Also Possesses Following Knowledge and Expertise

  • » Research and development of DoD tactical communications systems
  • » RF planning and testing for military, LMR and Cellular/ Wireless systems
  • » RF Interference and appropriate mitigation techniques for Broadcast, Microwave, LMR, Cellular/Wireless
  • » FCC licensing procedures and experimental licensing procedures
  • » Geographic information systems
  • » Analysis and modeling tools including MATLAB
  • » Tactical communication systems, national communications systems and architectures, and COTS wireless communications, including signal types, protocols and general system operations
  • » Experience in R&D requirements definition process, design lifecycle process to include: ICD development, protocol development, and architecture development

Education and Other Qualifications

  • » BSEE or BSCS and advanced degree from accredited college in a related discipline (MS, PhD) preferred
  • » Ability to complete government security investigation and meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information
  • » US Citizenship is required
  • » DoD SECRET clearance desired
