Public Safety

SSC works with government and private sector organizations to improve public safety spectrum access and network interoperability. In 2009 we completed an analysis for the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) about how secure use of cognitive radio technology can address the public safety spectrum access problem. Our Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) technology can be used by different types of first responders from diverse locations to immediately communicate in the event of a natural disaster or other crisis. The use of such technology has led to concerns regarding whether devices can be trusted to autonomously and dynamically adjust operating frequencies across numerous spectrum bands. To alleviate these concerns, we developed an end-to-end, Cognitive Radio Access Management (CRAM) subsystem that focuses on secure, flexible and user-friendly policy-based control mechanisms.
